Driving directions from Kahului Airport: Head south on SR-37 (Haleakala Hwy.), then bear left on SR-380 (Dairy Rd.) for just under a mile. Continue southwest on SR-380 (now Kuihelani Hwy.). Bear left onto SR-350 (S. Puunene Ave.). Continue south on SR-350 (Mokulece Hwy.), then bear left onto SR-31 (Piilani Hwy.). Turn right onto Keonekai Rd., then bear right onto S. Kihei Rd. The Aston at the Maui Banyan is located at 2575 S. Kihei Rd.

Five Palms Beach Grill - Located a few minutes' drive from Aston at the Maui Banyan in the Mana Kai Resort, this restaurant consistently earns acclaim for its food and romantic oceanside setting. Brunch is served from 8 AM to 2:30 PM daily on the shaded outside terrace. Linen-service dinner takes place inside under ceiling fans in a plantation-type setting. Both feature local ingredients prepared with award-winning finesse.

Joe's Bar and Grill - Located in the Wailea Tennis Center, a 10-minute drive south of Aston at the Maui Banyan, Joe's is owned by former Kingston Trio member Joe Gannon and his chef-wife Beverly. Open for dinner only, Joe's specializes in local seafood, steak, and prime rib.

AMENITIES & SERVICES

Amenity highlights: The largest of three public-park beaches and the only one with off-street parking, Kamaole III, lies a few minutes' drive from the resort. Like all beaches in South Maui, it's uncrowded. There's also good snorkeling among rocks and coral. To the delight of snorkeling and scuba-diving enthusiasts, the tiny island of Molokini, renowned for the clarity of its surrounding water, is not far offshore, and excursions are easy to arrange through the resort's activities desk.

What to expect: A parking garage concealed beneath blankets of brightly colored flowers greets guests as they arrive, a sign of the care the resort takes in assuring guests of a blissful Hawaiian vacation.

Insider tip: Large and beautiful, Keawakapu Beach begins in front of the Mana Kai Resort a few minutes' drive from Aston at the Maui Banyan. Next to the Mana Kai is a public parking lot. Signs point the way to the beach, which offers great snorkeling along its rocky northern terminus, terrific boogie boarding when the tradewinds blow, and long, tropical-fantasy walks. (Buildings along the beach seldom exceed palm-tree height, somewhat preserving the illusion the beachfront is undeveloped.)

Aston at the Maui Banyan is comprised of 200 condominium units in two-to-five-story, flat-roofed buildings. Kihei Town, a peaceful (20 mph limit) community arrayed along the ocean, provides shopping, dining, and nightlife opportunities. A mile from the resort is a shopping center with a 24-hour supermarket. In the resort's small lobby there's an activities desk for booking tours, excursions, luaus, and car rentals.

The resort contains a tennis court and a putting green. Many other recreational opportunities exist in South Maui. The activities desk in the lobby arranges these.

There are some 17 golf courses in South and West Maui, including four resort courses and one public course within five miles of Aston at the Maui Banyan. The activities desk makes reservations at them all. Golf clubs can be rented.

Also through the activities desk, the following beach gear can be rented: boogie boards, body boards, surfboards, boards with masks for viewing under-water life, snorkel sets, chairs, umbrellas, children's sand toys.
