Kihei Town's shopping and dining attractions begin about a five-minute walk away, and championship golf courses lie about 3 miles south. Units provide lanais (patios or balconies) for enjoying the climate, completely equipped full kitchens for convenience, and air conditioning for comfort. Between the resort's two buildings, a medium-size swimming pool, a whirlpool spa, a children's pool, a putting green, two shuffleboard courts, and a barbecue area satisfy guests' vacation desires. Beyond the park, the beach is narrow and rocky. Better beaches, all public, are readily available up and down the Sun Coast.

Driving directions from Kahului Airport: Head south on SR-37 (Haleakala Hwy.), then bear left on SR-380 (Dairy Rd.) for just under a mile. Continue southwest on SR-380 (now Kuihelani Hwy.). Bear left onto SR-350 (S. Puunene Ave.). Continue south on SR-350 (Mokulece Hwy.), then bear left onto SR-31 (Piilani Hwy.). Turn right onto Kilohana Dr., then turn right onto S. Kihei Rd. The Kauhale Makai is located at 938 South Kihei Rd.

What to expect: Kauhale Maki is a sanctuary of peace and quiet, set back 100 yards from the ocean and fronting a nearly unused county park consisting of lawns, widely spaced coconut palms, flowering gardens, and recreational facilities such as tennis courts and volleyball nets. Amenity highlights: When they're sunning on the lawn, swimming in the pool, soaking in the whirlpool spa, and barbecuing steaks, guests can hear birds sing and observe widely spaced coconut palms swaying in the breeze. Insider tip: Cook-at-home guests can travel 1.5 miles north three times a week to where the Farmers Market of Maui sells locally grown produce—along with local cheeses, freshly baked banana bread, and other treats—at a shaded roadside stand.
