Driving directions from Kahului Airport: Head south on SR-37 (Haleakala Hwy.), then bear left on SR-380 (Dairy Rd.). Continue southwest on SR-380 (now Kuihelani Hwy.), then bear left onto SR-350 (S. Puunene Ave.). Continue south on SR-350 (Mokulece Hwy.), then bear left onto SR-31 (Piilani Hwy.). Turn right onto Keonekai Rd., then turn left onto S. Kihei Rd. The Kihei Surfside is located at 2936 S. Kihei Rd.

The property has 84 units, all facing the ocean. All units have full-length sliding doors that step out to private linais. Decor is island-style, with rattan furniture. Units have private bedrooms, separate living and dining areas, and full kitchens—which include full-sized refrigerators, oven/stoves, dishwashers, and cookware and dishes. Ceiling fans provide cooling.

Restaurants favored by locals and visitors alike include: Five Palms Beach Grill - Located in the Mana Kai Resort, next door to the Kihei Surfside, this restaurant consistently earns acclaim for its food and romantic oceanside setting. Brunch is served from 8 AM to 2:30 PM daily on the shaded outside terrace. Linen-service dinner takes place inside under ceiling fans in a plantation-type setting. Both feature local ingredients prepared with award-winning finesse. Joe's Bar and Grill - Located at the Wailea Tennis Center a 10-minute drive south of the Kihei Surfside, this popular spot is owned by former Kingston Trio member Joe Gannon and his chef-wife Beverly. Open for dinner only, Joe's specializes in local seafood, steak, and prime rib.

What to expect: Utter tranquility, a rare, restful sense of privacy and seclusion, and magnificent views reign here. Amenity highlights: An immaculate sunning lawn runs along the oceanfront and then spreads into an enormous, roughly round swath that comprises the resort's entire northern end. A small, lovely garden sits in the swath's center, and here and there coconut palms lean against the tradewinds. This pure-green area buttresses the resort's atmosphere of splendid isolation. Insider tip: Experts, suitably armored against coral, pick their way through the rocky point in front of the resort to prime snorkeling and scuba-diving water. Other guests choose to walk to Keawakapu Beach, whose sand runs south from Mana Kai Resort next door. Long and broad, Keawakapu offers great snorkeling, terrific boogie boarding when the tradewinds blow, and long, tropical-fantasy walks. (Buildings along the beach seldom exceed palm-tree height, somewhat preserving the illusion the beachfront is undeveloped.)

The oceanfront location, sweeping views, and refreshing sense of tropical-paradise isolation fulfill Kihei Surfside guests' most ardent desires. In addition, there's a medium-size pool, a shuffleboard court, and a tidy, nifty barbecue area graced by tiki torches overlooking the ocean.

Many recreational opportunities exist in South Maui. The activities desk in Mana Kai Resort next to the Kihei Surfside can arrange activities. There are some 17 golf courses in South and West Maui, including four resort courses and one public course within 5 miles of Kihei Surfside. The activities desk makes reservations at them all. Also through the activities desk, the following beach gear can be rented: boogie boards, body boards, surfboards, boards with masks for viewing under-water life, snorkel sets, chairs, umbrellas, children's sand toys. Snorkeling and scuba-diving trips to the island of Molokini—renowned for the clarity of its water—can be booked through the activities desk.
