Bargain-rate resort on Sun Coast beachfront Situated on both sides of a beachside street on South Maui's Sun Coast, this charming, somewhat rustic resort provides guests with a true Hawaiian experience, complete with a secluded cove beach and accessibility to miles of relatively undeveloped beach. Some guestrooms provide lanais (patios or balconies) with sweeping views of the Pacific, migrating humpback whales (in winter), and sunsets. All rooms are air conditioned, decorated in light-and-bright, island-style furnishings, and contain refrigerators. For splashing around, the resort's extra-large pool (shaped like the island of Maui) is a treat. A volleyball court, two tennis courts, and a horseshoe pit offer other diversions. Complimentary morning coffee is available in the all-wood, open-air lobby building.

At the end of Mokulele Hwy., after the traffic light and stop sign, turn left onto South Kihei Rd. The Aston Maui Lu Resort is about a mile down the road on the left.

Numerous dining opportunities exist along South Maui's Sun Coast. Restaurants, many in shopping centers, can be found beginning 1.5 miles south of the resort in the central area of Kihei Town.

What to expect: Because the resort is comprised of just 120 rooms on 28 acres, there's a lost-in-paradise atmosphere here. The cove beach, about 100 feet of sand screened from the sides by rocky points; the long, relatively undeveloped beaches running north and south of the resort; the vast, golf-course-like lawn in front of the lobby building; the wilderness-cabin architecture of the original buildings (including unused cottages); the widely spaced coconut palms with fronds rattling in the trade winds—all of this creates a barefoot-casual ambiance rarely found in modern Hawaii. Amenity highlights: Nothing beats the view from the resort's three oceanfront buildings and the sunning lawn in front of them. Directly in front lies the blue Pacific, and to the north loom the West Maui Mountains. Considering the guestrooms' moderate price, lanais in these buildings are among the best seats in Maui for whale-watching in the winter and sunset-savoring year-round. Maui Lu also makes possible guests' fantasies about stretching out on a little tropical-cove beach. There's just such a cove between the oceanfront buildings. Insider tip: Maui Lu began in the 1950s as a Canadian's private residence (preserved today as the breezy, open-air lobby building). As a tribute to his British Columbia home, he installed two totem poles on the beach. They can be seen directly across the street from the resort's driveway entrance.

The resort contains two tennis courts, a horseshoe pit, and a volleyball court. Many other recreational opportunities exist in South Maui. The activities desk in the lobby can arrange these.
There are 17 golf courses in South and West Maui, including four resort courses and one public course within seven miles of Maui Lu. The activities desk makes reservations at them all.
Also through the activities desk, the following beach gear can be rented: boogie boards, body boards, surfboards, boards with masks for viewing underwater life, snorkel sets, chairs, umbrellas, children's sand toys.
