Spacious, family-friendly condominium resort in South Maui Set on the oceanfront, this South Maui condominium offers a tranquil atmosphere. All of Kihei Town's shopping, dining, and entertainment attractions are just a short drive away. The resort comprises two wings set in a deep V-shape fanning out toward the ocean, with units' fronts angled to afford the best possible views from within. Their lanais (patios or balconies) all provide views of both the ocean and the resort's immaculate grounds. Full kitchens, washer/dryers, cable TVs, VCRs, and data ports provide all the conveniences of home. Set within a vast, gorgeous lawn between the resort's two wings, a swimming pool, whirlpool spa, putting green, croquet area, four shuffleboard courts, and six gas barbecue grills satisfy guests' desires. The public park running in front of the resort contains two tennis courts. Beyond the park, the beach is narrow and rocky. Better beaches, all public, are readily available up and down the Sun Coast.

Driving directions from Kahului Airport: Head south on SR-37 (Haleakala Hwy.), then bear left on SR-380 (Dairy Rd.) for just under a mile. Continue southwest on SR-380 (now Kuihelani Hwy.). Bear left onto SR-350 (S. Puunene Ave.). Continue south on SR-350 (Mokulece Hwy.), then turn left on S. Kihei Rd. The Maui Sunset is located at 1032 S. Kihei Rd.

Among restaurants favored by locals and visitors alike are: Five Palms Beach Grill - A 10-minute drive from Maui Sunset in the Mana Kai Resort, this restaurant consistently earns acclaim for its food and romantic oceanside setting. Brunch is served from 8 AM to 2:30 PM daily on the shaded outside terrace. Linen-service dinner takes place inside under ceiling fans in a plantation-type setting. Both feature local ingredients prepared with award-winning finesse. Joe's Bar and Grill - Located in the Wailea Tennis Center a 15-minute drive south of the Maui Sunset, Joe's is owned by former Kingston Trio member Joe Gannon and his chef-wife Beverly. Open for dinner only, Joe's specializes in local seafood, steak, and prime rib.

What to expect: Families, honeymooners, and retired couples come to the Maui Sunset for the deep-green grounds spreading out to the deep-blue sea a short stroll away, and for South Maui's famously dry climate. Amenity highlights: At the Maui Sunset, guests cannot avoid rest and relaxation—from sunning on the lawn, to swimming in the pool, to barbecuing steaks at sunset, to friendly competitions on the putting green, shuffleboard courts, and croquet lawns. Insider tip: Three miles south of Maui is a long, uncrowded stretch of sand called Keawakapu Beach that begins in front of the Mana Kai Resort. Next to the Mana Kai is a public parking lot. Signs point the way to the beach, which offers great snorkeling along its rocky northern terminus, terrific boogie boarding when the tradewinds blow, and long, tropical-fantasy walks. (Buildings along the beach seldom exceed palm-tree height, somewhat preserving the illusion the beachfront is undeveloped.)

If more is desired, right by the pool is an activities desk that can book anything and everything Maui has to offer—including golf, luaus, snorkeling and scuba diving trips, and tours and excursions.

The resort includes four shuffleboard courts, a croquet lawn, a putting green, and ready access to two tennis courts in the county park separating Maui Sunset from the ocean. Many other recreational opportunities exist in South Maui. The activities desk near the pool arranges these. There are some 17 golf courses in South and West Maui, including four resort courses and one public course within 5 miles of Maui Sunset. The activities desk makes reservations at them all. The activities desk can also book snorkeling and scuba diving trips to the island of Molokini off South Maui.
